During treatment for a fractured clavicle in December 2009,
William P. Burrows was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He has
undergone extensive chemotherapy to fight this blood disorder and
has received transfusions of red blood cells and platelets, as a very
important part of this treatment at West Penn Hospital in
Pittsburgh. A stem cell transplant is planned as the next step in Bill’s
treatment.
Bill has been married for 6 years to Amy, a former school bus driver
for the Altoona schools. They are active members of Holy Rosary
Church in Altoona.
For the past 21 years, Bill has been a police officer in the Logan
Township Police Department and served his country as a Sergeant in
the U.S. Marine Corps. He is a member of the Mountain City Lodge
#8 Fraternal Order of Police. As a life member, Bill has served as
assistant chief, engineer, trustee, and vice president of the
Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company where this special blood drive
is being held in his honor.
The many friends of Bill encourage the community to donate blood at
this special blood drive in support of his journey back to health and for
the many other area patients who receive their care in Pittsburgh
hospitals. This drive also offers the opportunity to join the
Be The Match RegistryTM, the national registry for bone marrow
donors. Joining is easy – simply complete additional paperwork and
submit a sample mouth swab. Please donate in his honor!
Central Blood Bank is the not-for-profit organization that supplies the
blood products and transfusion-related services to more than 40
hospitals in western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, and
eastern Ohio.
